You’re balding, but you don’t know it yet. Not really. You think you’ve got time. Maybe you take vitamins. Maybe you rub something into your scalp at night. Maybe you check the mirror in the morning and tell yourself it’s just the lighting. But time takes what it takes. I see it. The thinning at the crown. The way your hair pulls back from the temples. You know it too, but you won’t say it. Not yet. You’re still fighting.
If only you knew, champ.
You laugh. You think it’s a joke. But it’s not a joke. I know what’s coming. The long war. The denial, the mirrors, the phantom itch of hair that isn’t there. The slow crawl toward the inevitable. Ignominy awaits. Not the first time a woman looks past you. Not the first time you catch a reflection you don’t recognize. Not even the day you run a hand through your hair and feel more scalp than strands. No, ignominy is slower. It’s the knowing. It’s the waiting. But I wait for nothing. It’s done. I am Bald. There is no war left to fight. No further shame. I have reached the bottom. And at the bottom, there is nothing to fear.
You are still falling. I have already landed.
