it's a fairly run of the mill "guy with a limited amount of time left" film but I've read several reviewers calling it a legitimately great movie and it made quite a few "top" lists. What am I missing? Or is this just fawning all over a black director pretending he's great?

I for one was very impressed that Spike Lee explicitly used Monte's story to inform the viewer as to how America deserved the 9-11 attacks, including silhouettes of the World Trade Center in the background during this sad tale of woe.

That's true art I tell you. Where the director uses a character as a mouthpiece to foist his political agenda on moviegoers. What an amazing film. What an amazing director.

Finally saw this movie, overrated. Don't get the love for it.

Higlights are Barry Pepper's douchey trader dude, another hilariously insecure slump shouldered PSH character, and Rosario Dawson and Ana Paquin being sexpots. also lol at a 30 year old Rosario Dawson playing an 18 year old on a swing in a Catholic girl uniform.

Norton himself isn't impressive, plot is simple and not compelling, post-911 moody backdrop is heavy handed. The bullshit about being a New Yorker reminded me of johnsmeyer and the rant at all the groups really being an ironic paean to New York's strength and diversity turned into Crash-level sentimentality on the ride to prison.

And the last ten minutes when his Dad is conjuring an alternate future for him is Mitch Albom/Dances with Wolves level syrup. We didn't spend enough time with or know enough about the character to want to tear up at seeing him with grey hair and wrinkles with his five puerto rican children.
