I have read that some think this makes the recording sound warmer. I wouldn’t go that far. It’s definitely distracting. Date: September 19th, 2026 11:11 PM Author: zarathustra it's not the cracking and imperfections that make it "warmer" the medium itself produces subtly different harmonics. but you have to be an autist about it or at least an attentive listener to perceive any difference most of the time. i think technically reel to reel is the highest fidelity analog medium and is less susceptible to audible wear. digital wins on absolute fidelity across the board. But a lot of vinyls are mastered differently and you get a different sound. And the pops and crackles are kind of fun. And the giant albums and the album art are fun.
