But the comparison with Europe is a good one. In Europe real freedom is seen as freedom from want. Guaranteed healthcare, guaranteed housing, guaranteed decent life, that's what makes you a free person. Not wealth.

But income disparity is not the reason for this. Also, income disparity falls away when you get to a pretty low standard of living. Someone in America who makes $2m per year and spends $1m is probably buying a lot of things and is pretty showy, but their life probably doesn't differe too much from the person who makes $250k and spends $100k on core spending. In fact, the $250k person may be saving/investing more than the $2m person.

I personally think the reason we chase money is because there's nothing else to do. That's the primary game. Being able to call yourself a good chaser is the ultimate currency, much more so than having better stuff. Friend A and Friend B could get along swimmingly well if they were both great at chasing money. Similarly, maybe Friend B is better at making money and has an edge over Friend A, who is mediocre at earning and is just spending more as a means of compensating for this relative deficit.
