Everyone is so desperate for a viral moment where someone in the audience has a crazy life story and the comedian can roast them. It's such low hanging fruit but people click on it to the point where comedy managers are telling their clients that it's the only way to break our and get famous. So we're stuck with this slop where stand up now is all just the comic desperately waiting for somebody to sit in the front row with a life like lex tp and say they have two moms so the comedian can go Oh my God that's so crazy! You have like two moms! Can you believe this guy! All we have left is comics roasting audience members. But the people are always boring and they're just like ya I have some normal job but the comedian tries and dig up drama that doesn't exist.

audience interaction is a part of live comedy. comedians that just get up and do their routine are stale. but too much reliance on crowdwork is lazy, and once you're good at jt you can go on autopilot just like a routine.

you need a good mix of both imo.

The old legends would do one or two prepared bits with the audience but it was 95% original jokes.

Don't remember a single Chappelle crowdwork moment. Write yo own shit!

crowdwork is impressive when good. there are probably many more people capable of being good at it than writing a full set of original material that you’d want to hear.

did you ever see him live? he did plenty at live shows. they just don't put that stuff in the specials unless it's really good because they want to highlight their best material + the whole purpose of crowdwork is getting the crowd engaged, so including it in specials doesnt serve its purpose.

in the age of social media any artist needs to be promoting stuff. but comedians aren't going to use their material because no one wants to go to a show to hear the same jokes they heard on insta. so they poast crowdwork. this may make it seem like thats all their doing, but if you go see them live it's not at all. although i agree it's leaned on more than it used to be.

CR. It's lazy, often unfunny (audience member says they were in rehab or something; comedian gasps; that's it); and often mean and uncomfortable.
