what was the political fallout from it? was Shimon Peres' ministership emboldened or weakened by the assassination (and the events surrounding it)?

a shin bet agent responsible for monitoring him was accused of withholding information regarding extremist activities, and later acquitted. his daughter went on to be a successful center-right legislator in the knesset, and eventually a deputy minister of defense. the assassin was part of right wing protests against the Oslo accords, which Rabin negotiated with Arafat. as i understand it, the PLO (at the time, the main palestinian militant group, and certainly the most dangerous) were mollified by the agreement and began to disband as a militant organization after these treaties were signed.

the incoming prime minister Shimon Peres had Netanyahu as the head of his parliamentary opposition (Likud). Netanyahu and Likud came to replace the Peres (Labour) government in 1996, and bibi began his first term as head of state and head of the Likud coalition government then.

the first major hamas bombing came about six months later, as retaliation to the cave of the patriarchs massacre.

interesting stuff
