It's decent for road trips when you just need to get something while filling up on gas. You know what you're getting and the calories are reasonable. How the ones in cities survive is beyond me.

Subway used to be a pretty standard lunch option before better sandwich chains opened and local joints expanded. Now, I think most survive by being "captive audience" restaurants. They're in airports, next to courthouses, inside Walmarts, etc.
They prey on people who are hungry and have limited options.
How do the freestanding ones in suburban shopping centers or busy downtowns survive? No idea.

i think the suburban shopping center ones do ok because they are one of the few lunch options around for strip mall shitlawyers / chiropractors / spin class teachers / etc. same with truck stop / gas station subways which helped to kill the brand but are probably among its most reliable stores now. busy downtown subways almost always have a tiny footprint and probably have a laughably low cost structure.
