whenever people say "they couldn't make Back to the Future" today, why not?

or whatever in the growing list of things people say this about
who cares about the people who would whine about "whitewashing" or sexism or whatever nonsense they'd complain about, these are some of the most miserable people in the world and there aren't that many of them
no one IRL would care about any "boycott" or whatever they tried
just ignore these losers instead of worrying about them or their opinions or things will continue to suck

There's some point to be told about a terrific contrast in the shared monoculture we had in 1955 and the steady divergence from that in 1985, in a way that we cannot possibly replicate. But that is of course possible to replicate in some way about 1994 in less effective ways.
The fundamental problems are that Hollywood is unable to tell a story effectively and any remake would be a disaster for two principle reasons.
The first and smaller reason is that the entire movie would be a bunch of GenX nostalgia porn about the lack of a digital culture. In Back to the Future, this lasts for 30 seconds when he first arrives in Hill Valley, with the occasional joke scattered throughout. Instead, the whole movie would focus on a 2024 Zoomer unable to navigate without a phone or the digital world. And that could be valuable in its own right, but it is more your standard time travel movie (e.g., modern guy landing in Arthur's court).
The second and larger reason is that the "lessons" taught to the parents would be the wrong ones. In BttF, Marty teaches his parents abstinence, self-control, initiative, discipline. It is fundamentally a kind of accidental stoicism because the child realizes his parents are making all sorts of mistakes and need to improve their lives in basic ways. And in doing so, he is, in a sense, teaching himself the same lessons--which, by the way, sound much more in 1955 ethics than 1985.
In a film with flashbacks to 1994, the entire film would be about not worrying about HIV, tolerance of gays, "authenticity," more meaningful race reckoning, and the like. It would entirely, entirely be about imposing 2024 social mores on 1994, so that 2024 can be even more progressive.
