reverse engineering a product is quite common, and generally accepted even among those who do value the idea of IP.
if commercial value is important to you, the production cost and market value of the accumulated information Athropic took and eventually paid out for is significantly higher than the market value of Anthropic, and presumably the owners would have been looking to license it to them and other AI companies.

But reverse engineering means examining a product you legitimately possess to understand its principles. It doesn't mean using fraudulent API access to systematically extract a competitor's model weights through deception.
