It really wasn't a musical genre, just a scene so of course it was brief and music that copied the sound (post-grunge) was popular for years after (Bush, Silverchair, Nickleback, etc.).

There was a concerted effort to kill it and its decidedly anti-consumer aesthetic and messaging from hands high in the fashion and design worlds

Marc Jacobs talked about this some iirc

It defined the hangover from the late 80s

NAFTA, business centralizations, ex-CIA president, corporate raiding and the titillating spectacle of bloodshed attached to it struck the savage blow and average proles in the PNW and Rust Belt ended up footing the bill

Hence "grunge". The refusal

Sometimes

The adversary role is a valuable one but you take it too far when it becomes solely about vivisection and not arguing about the merits of this or that thing that we discuss here

Furthermore it skews well made and moderate criticisms into grotesque exaggerations of what they're supposed to touch on, disrupts the germaneness of the proceedings (which historically has been an important thing for me), and introduces a strange sort of pornographic vector that detracts from the seriousness of the points I make otherwise

Grunge is the topic itt and a more or less neutral one we can all talk about without the sectarian squabbling that's defined the discourse here for a while now

The economic malaise of the moment was mostly a hangover from the 80s, but had nothing to do with NAFTA. It was the S&L crisis fallout that cause a short and relatively low pain recession in 91, but was the basis for Clinton’s “It’s the Economy, stupid” and “I feel your pain” schtick. The other major social trend was a massive crack and violent crime epidemic culminating in the LA riots in 92. And this was all happening against a backdrop of the collapse of the Soviets and the eastern bloc. So it was a moment where Gen Xers were proudly rejecting boomer culture on various axes—rejecting suburbs for urbanism, rejecting materialism for more austere and bohemian lifestyles, rejecting loud bright colors and tight fits in fashion, huge hair sprayed hair, and espousing an overall baseline of cynicism and anti-establishment sentiment that was still resigned to remaining the subordinate/subverter to the proverbial “dominant paradigm.”

My mistake re the timing of NAFTA; I use it as a bellwether point of demarcation for the greater thrust of economic trends associated with it that would later be considered to be the HW/Clintonian epoch of neoliberalism. The thing that afaik rolled out its banner to wash the hands of establishment figures and institutions of the free for all economic carnage and intranational cannibalistic violence, and the many looted citizen households produced as result, of the mid-late 80s. Cultural trends also do not match corresponding economic trends 1:1 in placement in time due to what I consider to be a sort of "lag" that happens for reasons relating to translation error, organic obfuscation, or inherent contradiction of substance between the two spheres at work

On the last bit

Agreed re the implicit charge but also believe that the result there comes from an intentionally inculcated "poverty of language"/"poverty of description" that prevents the impetus of the cultural movement (that grunge existed as an appendage of) from expressing or manifesting itself in ways that do not involve the mechanisms of economic production nor the spectacle. I don't think Xers can fairly be snickered at and defined solely as hypocrites for being reduced to the spiritual poverty of buying Cobain t-shirts within the bright lights and comfortable air conditioning of the local GAP store; this implies a sort of agency precluded by the forces of economically driven cultural capture working within, on, and against the frustrations and struggles that birthed grunge as a movement to begin with

Down on the Upside went platinum in the summer of 96. They broke up in 97 after headlining Lollapalooza in 96 and going straight into a world tour that they all hated apparently, but easily could’ve kept going if they wanted to. Cornell went on to form Audioslave and their first record went 3x platinum. Of all the grunge bands other than Pearl Jam they were easily the most durable, probably because they were the most talented in a rock star sense, even if they weren’t at Cobain’s level as songwriters or Jerry Cantrell’s level as musicians.

It was a launching pad to all the other indie label 90s stuff via a higher end/prestige indie (Sub Pop), and was conceived of as the best bridge between the hard rock crossovers of the late 80s ie GnR, Poison, etc. and a newer rock sound that would be more appealing to and durable with Gen Xers as a critique of and rebellion against boomers self-indulgent and narcissistic me generation bullshit. It was wildly successful in achieving this goal, and literally thousands of bands benefitted well into the aughts see eg a band like Modest Mouse who never would’ve had a chance to break big without the indie label pipeline that grunge established, and all the touring infrastructure and major label interest and marketing apparatus that it fostered. I saw Modest Mouse literally open for Fugazi in Austin in 1998.

It’s just fun to mock them bc they’re Ruined. Ruination is funniest when it first hits. Gen X is the first Ruined Gen. nobody thinks it’s funny when zoomers do gay shit or cry themselves to sleep or live in squalor bc it’s expected

Like a Gen X guy fastidiously and anachronistically working hard and getting ignored/fired by an Indian CEO or managed by Women is funny imo
