very obviously an intelligence cut out. was initially funded by some ... interesting ... bolivian connections. probably started as a way to repatriate cia cut out profits with simons as the front man. seems like he turned that into something that successfully leveraged classified intelligence IP as trading signals. cost him two kids though

wow, these sure sound like hits

"In 1996, his son Paul, aged 34, was riding a bicycle, when he was killed by a car on Long Island.[22] In 2003, his son Nicholas, aged 24, drowned on a trip to Bali, Indonesia."

yeah. some other suspicious deaths in / around the fund too.

i mean, the fund was legit in the sense that simons did hire smart mathematicians etc to develop trading signals. but it was much more than just a hedge fund. it seemed to function variously as a way to obfuscate international money movement, a way to monetize intelligence IP, and a way for intelligence agencies to pay obscene salaries to develop new IP

everything reputable has been scrubbed from the web at this point. there's some nutty but essentially factual stuff left, https://medium.com/@63ey5f4uw3k42v1exp7/chronology-mercer-medallion-fund-9aa719ceeb4f (google some of the names of his mit buddies and how they allegedly became billionaires with south american 'flooring' businesses, lol)

just as revealing imo, is what he says in interviews he gave later in life. it's pretty telling if you actually listen. in one he's asked what his greatest mathematical accomplishment was, and he says "it's classified"--which, given the importance of his published research, tells you a lot about the trove of cryptographic IP the government is sitting on. also he states that the first couple years, rentech wasn't even a quant fund, he was just doing 'fundamental' currency trading. hard to believe somebody would quit their cushy tenured professorship to spec on fx out of a strip mall.

the whole origin story just make no sense.

almost every thing about him/rentech on internet is transparent propaganda.

there's less blatant evidence for this, but it seems likely that SBF's "Alameda Research" hedge fund had essentially the same genesis--opaque high frequency trading as a means to mask offshore fund movement. which is why S&C moved so aggressively to clean up the paper trail

they quickly cashed out the handful of prominent mathematicians who helped them design their quant system. probably not 'in' on the game, so couldn't be allowed to hang around

read somewhere that rentech was in bed w/ madoff's fund to certain extent--probably knew it was a ponzi and had intel on when to get out. best way to think of rentech might be as an umbrella organization for high tech intelligence ops--a financial, incorporeal version of epstein's island. they probably dabbled in a bunch of shit: insider trading, money laundering, advance knowledge of government policies, etc. all carried out at a very advanced level, and genuinely pioneering in methodology, however. the 'technologies' part of their name is very apt, and not accidental.
