If you walk it 2x a day it's not that bad but it seems like most people don't do that, especially proles
Taller dogs need a rural setting though imo. and not some country road where the house is 30 feet from the road where they'll just get hit by a car. a god damn ranch.

three walks or fetches of 20 minutes each is fine for most dogs. but a lot of dogs only get two walks a day. and a family near me has a border collie that gets out only once a day -- which is nearly criminal.

Bigger dogs are usually lower energy. The best NYC dogs are Great Danes and other giant breeds. The toughest would be very high energy breeds that need tons of space like border collies (I knew a few in NYC too that seems perfectly happy) or belgian malinois.

Some people just get them because they're common in rescues and easy dogs to take care of. I might do it at some point but yeah, my top dislike of them is the short lifespan and health issues. I would never buy one from a breeder, obviously.
I knew tons of very happy GSDs in NYC and happy suburban GSDs. And labs live everywhere and are one of the most common breeds in the US.

I know several around here and knew several in NYC that were rescues. Looking at petfinder it has gotten better now for them. Great Pyrenees are giant dogs that are much healthier. My last one made it to 13.

This is such a retarded perspective. I have had Great Pyrenees for decades now which are generally rural guard dogs. My first was raised in NYC, my second is in a beach town. Both adore going to restaurants and found real nature to be fairly alarming. My dog today had a fantastic walk where she finally met the 2 other Great Pyrs that live a few blocks over but which we never met because our schedules are usually different. She also won't spent all that much time outside on her own anyway. The idea that she would prefer to live outside on a farm is ludicrous.
If you ignore them and only let them out in the yard instead of giving them several walks every day and leave then in a kennel instead of taking them with you when you travel then that's another matter. But my dog is pretty much always with me.

LMAO, protip: you can't make a 100+ lb great pyrenees do pretty much anything they don't want. If they wanted to run away and live on their own then they would.

And if you abuse a pyr it will simply become vicious. They are huge animals that are potentially extremely dangerous if pissed off. But more importantly, normal people can't really contain dogs like these against their will because the dogs can overpower them.
At any rate, mine is sleeping a few feet away on the couch. She could be asking to go outside, but she has zero interest in that. I'll walk her in a few hours, she will go happily and then when she has had enough will go home and go to sleep in bed. The route? Wherever she drags me and probably to the ocean which has been what she has insisted on the last several days.

She sleeps a regular amount, is free fed and doesn't over or under eat. She is always happy to go on her walks, happy to go on road trips, and is generally a very happy dog despite being from a breed that looks at the world like lawyers do (a constant search for potential risk).

Yes. When we were in college we did a study abroad and found this place in Canada. This guy had hundreds of acres and on a national preserve and the dogs roamed free. At the time I figured that this seemed like a much better idea than dragging them all the way to Moscow for half a year on two dangerous plane trips. When we got back both for some reason seemed very happy to go home instead of stay "free." Our rottweiler mix was obviously furious that we left her behind.
As an aside, the guy who ran this sadly passed away of cancer but I thought that this was an incredible business model. He posted daily pics that he took of the dogs.
The reality is that most dogs just want a comfortable life in a nice big house with a comfy bed and as much food as they want. You can argue that she is overly domesticated or whatever, but she is nevertheless happy with this. You're talking about a dog that appreciates 5 star hotels.

She has never spent even an hour in a crate or cage (we've never had one). And what will you do when your hounds want to come inside because of A/C, the better food smells, etc.? I've known wolf-hybrids (and outright wolves) that people raised that want to live inside. The reality is that you want to enjoy modern luxury, not live in a cave or hut with no AC and sleeping on dirt.

You could say the same thing for humans. I've lived in places with street dogs. Take a wild guess at how long street dogs live vs. pets.
What you're missing is that humans are also just animals. All of these things you're spouting apply equally to dogs and people. We didn't live throughout history like we do now either. Doesn't mean we want to go back to being wild.

it’s true that some dogs are fine without a lot of room to run around and that some of the biggest dogs do ok like that
but really what matters is keeping it on your own property. it should be legal to shoot and kill any dog pissing or especially shitting anywhere except on hunting land

Living in Manhattan without a dog is ridiculous. It is probably the single biggest safety measure you can adopt. We spent maybe 2 weeks in NYC without a dog total between when our very old passed and when our small pyr puppy arrived. Even the arrival of this tiny puppy that toddled was enough that people crossed the street. We walked every night late in Central Park and no one attempted to rob us. We lived in Harlem - never had a bad incident.

My dog seems pretty happy with an electric fence in our half acre lot. I also ran the electric fence into some county Parkland woods behind the house to give him more space.
