I allegedly have it, but I don't really believe its real and refuse to take medicine. But also another thing is that I see its popular these days for people to either complain about or identify with their "mental illnesses". I reject this behavior. I generally don't tell anyone I was diagnosed with this. But I also secretly think it makes me better than other people. A lot of famous people have had manic depression.

well the issue is that I never get to publicly identify with it because I don't really believe in it so I don't want to tie it up with how people view me. But also I secretly wish people knew because I think its a superior phenotype. So that's why I'm testing the waters out here.

If you do indeed have it but can function without it, it's likely a very mild case.

I have a severe case of manic depression combined with schizophrenia. When I'm manic I run on about 2-4 hours a sleep for extended periods. The schizophrenic symptoms are more crippling as it involves severe persecutory delusions that make me unable to function. I've been hospitalized eight or nine times for this (I've lost count).

My case is severe enough where I've finally accepted that I need medication. When I go off my meds I end up in the hospital eventually, often lose my job, etc.

interesting. they didn't specify whether they thought it was mild or moderate or severe but they said that its bipolar 1 not 2 or arguably even schizoaffective. I have been psychotic like twice but only because of severe mood episodes (mania) and those were the only times I was hospitalized. I don't plan on ever going back though. I cut back on stress and don't use drugs or alcohol anymore and my symptoms are now basically mild but still noticeable. it only comes out really on rare occasions or extreme conditions, otherwise I don't think anyone would know the difference. that's part of why I think its mostly bullshit, because of how it feels like the entire thing is so conditional, like it only activates under certain conditions like stress or heavy drinking, but otherwise its not much different than normal highs and lows of a human.

Well if you can function without meds it's probably mild.

I wasn't drinking or using drugs during any of my psychotic episodes, and I wasn't under extreme stress or anything, either. In my case the paranoia built up over around two years until I became fully psychotic overnight.

That first psychotic episode started a cycle: become psychotic, do enough crazy things that the police get involved, I get hauled off to the hospital, and I stabilize on medication. But after each hospitalization I'd stop the meds, and the paranoia and mania would inevitably creep back up, and the cycle would repeat. It took eight or nine hospitalizations for me to acknowledge that I needed meds.

Haven't had a single psychotic episode since I started taking meds consistently about 5.5 years ago, so the meds are definitely doing something. I'm gainfully employed but still somewhat functionally limited. That's more tied to severe anxiety than anything else, though.

I'm not boomerboat, but I remember he and I share some similar experiences. If I remember correctly, his symptoms were more of extreme mania, whereas my biggest issue was severe psychosis. And he's on different meds than me. I don't remember exactly what he is/was taking.

Similar experience for me. I went through a bunch of different antipsychotics before settling on Latuda. It's the only one I've been able to tolerate long-term. All the others I tried made me gain weight, and most also caused too much drowsiness.

Caplyta is a promising alternative to Latuda, but I'm stable on Latuda and haven't had a need to switch.

Maybe me.

I'm definitely a depressedmo but I have a hard time seeing the mania.

At the same time I've had episodes of psychosis. These have been primarily (but not always) brought on by alcohol abuse.
