i had one growing up and yeah i never thought to get one later, partially because of this, so this is probably tcr. however it's odd that they seemed ubiquitous in the 90s yet have completely vanished since. i can't remember the last time ive seen one. even a dead one like how you still see dead home intercoms all the time.

Probably easier to update kitchen cabinets and you’d never know there was one there, whereas intercoms you probably had people who thought they might still use them and figured why cut the wires.

my childhood home also had a trash compactor and an intercom system. me and my neighbor buddy were working on a short movie about a trash compactor that was compacting the whole world into itself. other random plotlines interspersed with footage of my family trash compactor at work.

yeah i noticed a forcememe on them. idgi.

i'm assuming people have shitty apartment fridges w/ no icemakers or their fridge icemakers break and they dont want to replace the whole fridge.

anyone who can afford valuable counter space for an ice maker you'd think has a nice enough kitchen with a fridge ice maker.

it's the opposite, actually. now it's prestigious to have a stand alone icemaker with none built into your fridge. combo units are like tv/vcr combos.

totally fair! i am just questioning, what was their utility in the home to begin with. was the home or the garbage truck space-limited or something?

i think it was more about convenience -- fewer trips to the garbage can, fewer cans to take to the curb on garbage day. makes sense in theory, after all im sure everyone here jas manually compacted garbage to avoid taking it out.

as i said below, the issue may lie with "garbage day." we need a deep dive on garbage day to determine when and where weekly garbage pickup became widespread

ty that makes sense. i'm in an apt building with a garbage chute so i don't feel like i'm missing out. wouldn't it start to stink if you just compacted repeatedly without taking it out?

Probably not here. It was useful in CA because they only give you a tiny black bin, to encourage recycling and composting. But here they burn the garbage for electricity, so they give you a giant black bin and are always asking people to throw away more paper and plastic to fuel the incinerator.

But in CA it was useful b/c you could put 100lbs of trash into a small can.

This reminds of the central vac systems were you’d hook a tube attachment up to ports around the house to vacuum.

Then stick vacs happened and those seemingly disappeared overnight

We have a central vac system (and intercom) that we've never used. I turned it on once but my wife didn't see the point. She runs those Roomba robots on each floor multiple times a day.
