To achieve old age, you had to be knowledgeable about plants, weather, navigation, animal routines, etc. You had to be skilled at some kind of conflict resolution, be it fighting or diplomacy or forging compromises. You were a wealth of knowledge for the people around you and represented an incredible resource.
Today, the opposite is true. Longevity is the default, and anyone can curl up in their house and make it to infirmity (barring bad luck like cancer). The adventurers and thrill seekers and others who have pushed human progress are now the ones who absorb all the risks and die early. There’s no point in worshipping your elders when their advice and life lessons are to just casually exist in safety. |

In my son’s cohort, I don’t see that. They give up too easy and are quick to blame others.
You have to work hard and keep at it. Nothing is ever handed to you.
I hire and work with young people. Both the men and women are smart and talented and do good work, but there is a fire in the women that reminds me of what it takes to achieve things. They also seek advice a lot more than the men, and follow it. They look for mentors and they network. They’re going places.
The men can do the same thing. |

Did not finish college did horribly in high school so I went to work in construction and 35 years later I have three homes , I own the shop I work out of and my wife and me will retire comfortably. I live in a house in a great neighborhood that is in a college town. There is a rental next door to me. A new owner let white students rent it out and it was a disaster. Instead of studying they turned the house into an underage bar so they could make some money. After some law and town intervention we got them out and since then we have had asian students occupying the house. Have not heard a peep from them because they are to busy studying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
