My parents were poor and I didn't receive many toys growing up, especially early on. But I was obsessed with Transformers and wanted Optimus Prime more than anything. So my parents scrounged to get him for me -- the only wrapped toy I ever remember receiving, now that I think about it. I remember excitedly tearing open the package to find that what they actually bought me was the brand new Ultra Magnus instead of Optimus Prime. I hadn't even seen the movie. So I started crying, which must have disappointed my dad terribly, who didn't understand it at all. I doubt my dad even earned $250/wk back then, and the toy was $25 (now that I look it up). I remember all of that and feel ashamed every Christmas.

It's a good lesson about gift giving. When you're giving something in an area the recipient cares deeply about (often hobbies), don't make substitutions. Just get the exact thing they want or get a different type of gift.

I knew one kid who had it. Dad was a CEO of a public company you've heard of. I stayed at his house one week and spent a lot of time with it. However you didn't need to be filthy rich to purchase it. It was $150 off the shelf if I recall. Mostly it was a space issue. It took up a good part of a room. That was sort of my mom's issue with it. She said the box was too large.

$150 --> $30,000 would have been wild
