I actually spent like 6 months working on a project but it was extremely research heavy and still had a lot of obstacles that seemed impossible or difficult to solve so I kind of burned out on it. I'm thinking it would be best to exploit some kind of high leverage hidden but low hanging fruit. But I've been in this mood everything I think of or look at sounds like shit. Been dragging my feet on the substack thing too, but have been working on my first three essays slowly. You basically create a probabilistic evidence ledger with tiered trust sources and continuous risk scoring (can include physical fingerprinting, chain-of-custody events etc.). I have seen a few versions of provenance services but they went all in on blockchain which is weak because noone needs to break the cryptography they just attack somewhere else at the binding between object and record. This is something people have worked on for a long time, there have been really good attempts but they all had adoption problems because noone really needed it. Another issue with it has to do with actually linking an identity to the document or signature, but I'm wondering if a way to overcome that would be to build on top of existing infrastructure like google and apple id. I think AI generated text specifically might be a big risk for contracts, financial disclosures, medical records, insurance policies etc. Detecting inconsistencies, style signatures, compression artifacts in these docs would be a more tractable problem than anything regarding ID verification. The training data for this exists publicly. A webapp where you "submit a document, get a forensic analysis report" is something one person with an AWS account and credits could pull off. Could also work for something lawyers, judges can use to verify would be big considering lawyers are being sanctioned left and right for submitting hallucinated bs. Maybe have a routing layer that identifies the doc type, then specialized modules for metadata forensics, image forensics, styolmetric analysis, and provenance timeline reconstruction. All these I'm thinking could be implemented with existing libraries. Stack could be something like python backend with AWS lambda for serverless compute. Open CV with error analysis for image forensics. One of the NLP libraries for stylometrics. And an llm api call at the end to generate report narrative. Plus a clean minimal React frontend that takes uploads and renders reports. The report wouldn't make hard calls just surface evidence and anomalies without making a terminal determination and a human makes the call.
Might be able to ship module by module since each piece is useful in itself. Do metadata first, then image forensics, then stylometrics. I don't think it would take long at all. 6 weeks to get something worth showing people and decide if its worth it. |
