They were created to be one of many small vehicles one could utilize to save for retirement.
They were never intended to be an absolute requirement to avoid eating dog food in your 80s, but it was advantageous for certain jews (who are NOT the same as the people who created 401ks btw) to have that be the case so here we are.

where is his reasoning?
my wife and i each have roughly $1m in our accounts at ages 45 and 46. i'm focusing on getting to $1.2 - 1.5m in taxable accounts so i can go into semiretirement at around 49. we let the $2m in 401ks grow for another 20 years, it'll probably be 10-15m, likely on the higher end of that scale.
i guess most people can't retire because they are 52 and have $94k in their account, but the pension system is no better. didn't you generally have to work until like 62 under those systems anyway?

The problem is that any system which requires people to act responsibly at scale for their own self interest is never going to work. There’s just no fucking way people are going to max out their 401k when they could instead buy an iPhone and a huge ass truck.
This is why I begrudgingly admit that social security is necessary to prevent olds from starving to death.

there's no reason to because you agreed with me in your last response.
"you don't want to "conserve" traditional government, you want no government at all."
"all consideration of government except national defense should begin with the premise that the less government, the better"
retard, if all consideration of government should begin with the premise that the less government the better then whatever government exists you'll want less than that i.e. you want no government ultimately.

so you request a substantive response, i give it, and you just say "wrong" without any argument why and then go on to cry about antisemitism and fantasize about degenerate sex acts? odd case this the playbook for midwit jews 100% of the time.
"you want no government"
"no, i just think whatever government exists there should be less."
"that inherently leads to no government if less is always better."
"wrong. zurich is an antisemite and you suck cock. later goys!"

not everyone is forced to plan ahead. that's why we have so many fucking poors.
people who do plan ahead should be better off than those who don't
whenever you have people involving the government in social policies, they will fuck it up. it follows that the goals of social policy should focus on the bare minimum necessary to achieve the goal. people should be incentivized to achieve far more than the guaranteed minimum.
i agree with a point you are making which is why i was and remain against social security investing in or permitting beneficiaries to invest in the stock market. not entirely because of your point, but that is one of the reasons
it's not like there aren't many other options besides the stock market for people to invest in. and it's not like the stock market doesn't consist of stocks all over the world and in different markets or industries, etc

401ks make more sense than pensions. Remember, at its peak apparently 40% of people were part of a pension plan - a huge umber of that probably never saw a dime. Many of those also went bust up even if they did qualify.
The US job market is much more fluid now so you need a much more fluid solution.
Plus, a pension basically would require you to put total trust in your corporate employer. Public companies are basically required to be evil. Any time you had a bad earnings call, an army of HR people would examine creative ways to fuck over employees and relieve the long term pension obligation.
It's a safer result for you and your employee to put your retirement money in your own account.

the conversation needs to be divided between pensions provided by
private companies
local municipalities
states, and
federal
and perhaps more divisions are worth discussing
all of the above have important differences

At my first job, I had the option of either a traditional pension or having my employer contribute the money that would have gone into the pension fund into a 401k-type plan. I ran the numbers, and even if I assumed extremely conservative stock market returns, if I contributed to the 401k plan until the vesting date for the pension and immediately converted it into an immediate annuity, I would end up with a monthly benefit that was far greater than the monthly pension benefit.
TLDR: Pensions are flame. The only benefit of a pension is that it prevents you from contributing 0% to your 401k and buying an $80k truck instead. If you are a non-stupid investor, you will end up with far more money in retirement if you contribute to a 401k.
