How about this:
The whole season is a playoff. If you lose, you are disqualified from national championship contention. If, after conference championship games, there is zero, one, or three or more undefeated teams, then thr two best teams as judged by an agreed upon mathemagical algorithm play eachother for the championship.
This brings the excitement of playoffs to every team, and extends it throughout the entire season, magnifying the importance of not only every game but every snap. This would make college football uniquely exciting and dare i say compelling.
