i've had a different takeaway as i've gotten older. i have definitely gotten continually wiser as i've gotten older, as have my friends and peers who i respect and admire
but most other people just....don't. there's no growth, there's no curiosity, there's no intrinsic desire or drive to understand things better
there are guys i knew back in college who were definitely smarter and wiser than me back then and who i looked up to who i've caught up with in recent years and they're pretty much the exact same person. it's wild. like they got trapped in a star trek temporal bubble or something
most people really just do not care about anything at all beyond their small little parochial corner of the world and don't grow at all in any way that matters. it reminds me of the concept of "the gossip trap": until human civilization became advanced enough to move beyond dunbar-number groups into hierarchies and commercial relationships based on abstraction, individuals would always be pulled back into the bucket by the other normie crabs and no one was ever free to create, innovate, evolve, etc

It's tempting to see it this way, because there is some truth to this, but in practice these kind of parochial people don't actually stick to their parochial corner of the world. They end up with bigoted, wrong, self-defeating/harmful opinions on the outside world because they are too lazy and arrogant and mentally undeveloped to have the self-awareness to realize how little they know
It's these people who end up becoming Orange Man Bad TDS nutcases or "christcucks" who believe in insane nonsense like Israel First dispensationalism
The wise man knows what he doesn't know and is comfortable with drawing lines and staying within them

This is an interesting thread idea. I think what you've got your thumb on is the idea that we're all inherently self-centered and a bit out of tune with those around us.
Here's an example, when I went to Disneyland with CSLG, we were having a sort of general discussion about our careers. I asked him, sort of in a coy way, if I should stop working for my defense firm. It was loud and there was a crowd around and he took my question to be, will you (CSLG) ever stop working?
When he answered, I had to redirect him and say, "No, I was only thinking about myself." To which he quickly replied, "Haha, so was I!"
So you see, we see the world through our lived experiences. As you're a parent now, you expect more from your parents in terms of help, support, etc. They aren't giving it. That's okay. Let that just be the state of things. Don't jump to conclusions about what shitty people they are. You're kind of shitty too, you may not realize it yet, but just turn the magnifying glass inward. Then you will see. Believe me, you will see.
