There really isn't any such thing as a "Medicaid nursing home" anymore (if there ever was). Medicaid pays nearly all the long term care costs in this country. There are not many nursing homes out there that refuse to take Medicaid patients, even the continuing care retirement places that are pretty nice and require 6 figure entrance deposits usually accept Medicaid.

Cr. Wife and I checked out one of these in our area. $270K is the cheapest possible buy in for a small one BR apartment ($410K if you want to get 80% it back when you die) plus $5.5K/month with no care. If you need care, the price goes up depending upon how much care you need. Triple the buy in and add 50% to the monthly for a place we might actually want to live in. Monthly charges are raised annually. They will take some number of Medicaid patients in the skilled nursing facility part. Long wait lists (years)for the nicer units.

The cheapest way to spend your golden years is probably in an assisted living group home. I got my sister into one of these. It did not take Medicaid. 10 years ago it was $3K/month for a private room in a large house in an upscale tract neighborhood. Full time staff and meals included. Assisted living in a facility with a private apartment is probably $6-15K depending upon the area and niceness.

Wife and I are trying to figure out what to do if we fail to drop dead on schedule.

Wife's sister has dementia and is a facility where almost everyone is on Medicaid. It's actually not bad physically, but there are no activities. Her husband takes her out almost every day. Otherwise she would sit and stare at the wall.

It buys amenities. The price also includes one meal/day, utilities, housecleaning, repairs, etc. When you move in they totally remodel the unit to your specification. It also has multiple restaurants and common amenities. Wife's sister (not the dementia one) who is 82 just moved into a high end continuing care community with her 96 y.o. boyfriend. FWIW, they are still having sex and he can't keep his hands off of her. They gave us the hard sell and pushed us to look at the version near us. We found it uninteresting. Too many old people.

I volunteered as a driver for meals on wheels and the state of many elderly people was appalling. Many of them we were their only social interactions. They'd get low quality trash meals once per day and that's all they got to eat. Also one lady we delivered to every week, seemed normal & in good health, then the next week we went there her relatives were there dividing up all her possessions after she died. They had an estate sale and there was a little portable TV with a plaque on it that said her husband was awarded it on retirement after working at a local company for 40 years, they were selling it for $5. The company was long out of business too, shut down due to NAFTA. Not sure why I'm writing any of this

this is most depressing shit on multiple levels that you'll ever watch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMDsUdhymbQ

we're supposed to die at home from the flu that we caught from our grandkids, or from some stupid infection that gets into our blood stream, or from cancer that we didn't notice until the very end. modern medicine and the medical industrial complex have completely perverted our relationship with death. i know everyone voluntarily signs up for all this shit, but you can't expect the average person to say no. it's incredibly abusive and wasteful and inhumane and no one can stop it.

fyi: palliative and geriatric doctors have been euthanizing olds for decades. when QOL is gone, its time for a nice pain killer shot/IV add to help you along the way, nbd, it was a blessing, they went in their sleep/it was peaceful/after a long battle with/at the age of 93.

it happens daily. imagine your 97 yo dementia grandmother in a shitty paliative nursing home, unable to speak, unable to shit or piss, in pain from arthritis, hooked up to tubes and IVs and all manner of indignities and this has been going on for the past 3-4 weeks and its only getting worse. For everybody. Dr. Painkiller to the rescue. They drift off to sleep, will never wake up, and the body says to the soul, "C'mon friend, its time to take you home."

these people should all be dead long before they ever reach the "nursing home" stage

it totally sucks for them and i feel emotionally sorry for them, but none of these people should exist. you're supposed to die when you get old, not become an invalid and an anchor for the young and healthy and virile and productive. this is really a moral issue that everyone should be concerned with. one of the reasons why the western world is deteriorating so badly is because old people have so much disproportional power and influence and will not just fucking get out of the way and die like they're supposed to

modern technology keeping people alive as the walking dead in order to make more monopoly money off them is truly grotesque in so many ways

i wouldn't have them do anything. the fear of death is too strong; people will succumb to it, and there's no helping it

one can speculate that maybe a different society, a different culture, a different people might prepare themselves better for the terror at the end, but that's fantasy

we'll all continue to suffer horribly for years before we finally die

i just can't imagine people or governments in the past blowing their wealth on end of life care. it's such an absurd waste. there's no way some italian grandpa in 1550 would've sold his family's farm to pay for a nurse. nor would he have had to, because there would've been plenty of people around to take care of him. and anyone trying to con him out of his money for snakeoil would've been ran out of town. the root of the problem is we're godless; we don't have families, we don't have communities, and we're terrified of death. and the medical industrial complex is absolutely thrilled to step into that sad, lonely gap.

wealthy, powerful people have done crazy things to avoid death forever. your italian grandpa in 1550 couldn't have sold a farm and hired a nurse or extended his life through medical care. it was simply impossible. that's the difference.

wealthy people have always done it because it is vain and decadent, just as they are. but now even average people do it. no average person in history would've squandered their family's money on something so pointless. no government would have paid for it, either. if you're old and sick, you go to church and go home and die. old people need to have the dignity to check the fuck out.

it's not "vain" or "decadent" to not want to die

people in the past had different understandings of and relationships to death because of their environments and circumstances

this is one of the most complex and difficult topics and questions that exists for human beings. it's not simple at all

what are you not understanding. peasants didn't have any real amount of "money", and they didn't own anything they could sell anyway. even if they could, life extending medical care didn't exist and couldn't be bought

you might as well claim that young women in 1550s italy didn't fly to machu picchu because of their values

that's fair, but it's still an absurd waste of time, money, and effort and we should all be deeply ashamed about it. i think it's mostly a cultural failing. of course individuals want to live forever, but society should steer them toward acceptance of the inevitable and going out with dignity. we're doing the exact opposite. no one is ashamed of anything anymore and the medical system will literally cut your limbs off one by one and pump your heart and lungs for you for years until you die. no one is willing to say no. or more accurately, there's always someone willing to say yes. it's abusive, no different than selling drugs to a helpless junkie.

Western civilization was powered for many years by collective acceptance of Christianity and the afterlife. Believing this wasn't really the end is an enormous font of strength/motivation. Then over the course of the 20th/21st century we proceeded to shatter that belief amongst the masses and all we're left with is at best consumerism.

It's no surprise people in the west have trouble dealing with it, it's not in our tradition to accept death.

Someone told me the goal of fitness as a middle aged and older person is to have a high quality of life as long as possible which will allow you to die relatively quickly when you do get terminally ill. Or just to die of a heart attack or stroke randomly.

One grandparent I had died like this, another one was well on their way until they got into an accident (caused by an illegal) and then spent the next 5 or so years in agonizing pain becoming crippled.

I've also seen some crazy shit...like an old guy I knew who lived across the hall from me was basically all alone, and slowly dying of stomach cancer. I think his wife had died or he was a lifelong bachelor maybe.

Towards the end he fell a couple times and I could hear him calling for help. I got the fire department to help him...I remember vividly once in his piss smelling apartment (he kept the door unlocked). It was crazy. Just huge stacks of pill bottles in buckets of KFC everywhere on top of random clutter.

I think as you get older and if you don't have people in your life taking care of you or a strong community it makes a lot of sense to sell off/donate possessions you don't need or use...because eventually the hoarder instinct takes over or you simply cant keep track of the stuff you have.

Also from what I've noticed, even if you do every single thing right health wise, as a man after the age of 90 your body starts to completely fail you. I'd consider myself lucky if I had the same health I have now and just dropped dead on my 91st birthday.

i just realized that if reasonably intelligent poasters in this sad, cynical, nihilistic corner of the internet think that my view on this is unreasonable, my friends and family must be completely shocked by it. life is so shitty, just withering away day after miserable day waiting for it all to end. the longer it takes the worse it gets. and yet nearly everyone wants to keep going no matter what. it's so pathetic. but like my dad told me recently "your (extremely frugal, calm, rational, and christian) grandpa did it, you'll do it, too." i used to be terrified of dying in a plane crash; now i pray for it. my uncle died on his couch at 53 from an aneurysm. lucky bastard!

a neighborhood close to the one i grew up in had about half of its available stock bought out in bulk by a Blackstone shell firm ("invitation homes") and the first thing they did was cut rents across the board while slowly raising them over the span of ~8-9 years to a point above the average mortgage payment prior

it was a nice middle class neighborhood and now it looks like new delhi. many of the original owners, there for decades, have since moved out and those homes get snapped up by the firm and tricked out to people living 18 to a 2-3 bedroom home

i agree with your latter point but the banks are influenced by the culture and economic demands of the major firms and vice versa. the same people sit on the boards of both of these companies or if they don't then a proxy does

it's a loop and that loop is infected with toxic money-driven cultural facets as well as demands for constant growth from assets and these demands are effectively producing a business schema that shreds what's important about life to the people living it outside of the overlay placed upon it by the bigfirm combine harvester, all so that some fat dickhead can afford a new mistress each month and a newly tiled pool for his whore sprog litter

PE Really Sucks but that other guy is right, it's not a significant factor in the real estate situation in the US

Housing costs in the US suck because of mass immigration, demographics rendering many otherwise desirable spaces uninhabitable, the civil rights act, and extreme supply scarcity in desirable areas

All of the nons have to be removed, simple as. The housing situation will only get worse otherwise

real estate in the US is churn and burn cyclical blockbusting shit and its the finance-driven demand for artificial leech-like growth that keeps it in that state

all honest conservatives run up against these problems eventually if they haven't been anesthetized by money into a quasi-lucid twilight state

the elderly get treated like shit in this country but the reasons why are all sacred cows and have to do with untouchable elements of american culture

the atomic family is like a snake constantly being loaded up with guilts from outside and then forced to shed its skin to keep the nucleus from expiring from various cancers. the extended family is generally a superior model as it has *memory* and *context* that the atomic family does not

when you think about it the atomic family is actually a very liberal concept and it tends to do best in times where liberalism is ascendant

it's also sclerotic and resistant to change, no matter how necessary that change is, and a driving factor in rates of child abuse

not siding with either one with any kind of permanence here but family structure is a major factor of meaningful contention in the comparison of western and non-western outcomes

Abused as kids by parents, abused as elders by caregivers. Abused as adults by the system. Lol at this world. And we keep reproducing.

One night as I was leaving from visiting my sister in her assisted living place, a little old lady named Judy, who was bedridden and constantly curled in the fetal position whispered from her room, "Hey, come here." "Hi, Judy, what can I do for you?" I asked. "Call me a taxi," she said. I inquired, "Where are you going?" "Vegas," she said.
