It led to years of working on myself to build confidence and spending much of my 20s and 30s aimlessly searching for the right role models to build the parts of myself that were neglected throughout my childhood.
I'm more or less fine now, but it could have easily been much worse. I visited my parents yesterday and it took me back to those negative familiar places. And I see it in my siblings who are also similarly failing to lead. My mom was recently diagnosed with cancer, and her care is being managed by my sister-in-law (my parents live with them) while my brother lets her serve as his agent.
It would be so great if my brothers and I could just communicate in a group chat of us alone and talk openly but everything goes through their advisors now. It's frustrating to say the least. |

I was blessed with a wonderful mother who led where necessary but never belittled or dehumanized my father and allowed him to maintain the facade of male leadership. But the downside of that unwavering loyalty is she never took my side when he and I had our fights and always made excuses for him while blaming me.
I don't begrudge her position, that must have been incredibly challenging to thread the needle like she did all her life. |
