Extremely rare to win one of these. First of my career. They are usually just rubber stamped.

I prepared an hour before the hearing, got a little fired up, tested my argument on my paralegal, she patronized me (she’s 180).

Set low expectations, client didn’t give a fuck if he lost, totally expected it.

In California, the judge has three options when presented with a DVRO renewal request: deny it, 5 years, or lifetime.

Visiting judge. Never heard of her. Old white lady. No one else has heard of her. I was guaranteed to lose with the regular judge so I rolled the dice.

But we first made a good faith offer of five years. That was the 98% chance anyway. Why risk a lifetime one with a 2% chance of success?

She rejected the offer. She wanted lifetime RO. Opposing counsel was cool, tried to sell our offer but mom was a bitch. And she left the courthouse with NADA (that’s Spanish for “nothing” (they are Mexican and needed interpreters)).
