FFS, what can the EU do? Retaliate? Its military is vestigial, its industrial policy a series of white papers. Its dignity lies not in capacity but in ritual. Its power is procedural, enmeshed in a performative liberalism that, when confronted by Trump’s libidinal mercantilism, looks ghostly. Geist without Tat. Meanwhile, Trump speaks in threats, numbers, and unilateral verbs.

The EU was built as a Kantian federation of states, meant to avert recurrence of the 20th century. But Trump is a Nietzschean recurrence of the Real: will without shame. The EU bet everything on a world in which threats are negotiated, not made. It is not merely that they lack tanks or tariffs. It is that they lack affect. They are emotionally unprepared. The Trumpian tariff isn’t a policy; it’s a humiliation ritual. A dominance display. The EU’s Habermasian dialogue has no language for this kind of thing. Theirs is the posture of the librarian confronted by a brawler imho.
