A Tuesday rally on slightly hotter-than-forecast inflation underscores where the momentum lies in the stock market these days: up, up and away.
To one strategist, however, the bullishness is not nearly enough. James Thorne, the chief market strategist at Wellington-Altus, a Canadian wealth management firm with over $30 billion in assets, in a new report is targeting 7,500 for the S&P 500 by next spring. (There aren’t many Wall Street targets for next year, though Ed Yardeni also has put down 7,500 for his end of 2026 goal.) That would be a further 16% advance from Tuesday’s close.
Thorne’s optimism has echoes of Tom Lee at Fundstrat, and like Lee, he’s also a crypto enthusiast. He hailed the passage of the Genius Act regulating stablecoins, as well as the Clarity Act (that still needs Senate approval) dividing crypto oversight between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
“Blockchain and digital assets are not speculative bubbles or scams—they are the rails on which the digital economy runs. With strict regulation, regular audits, and global standards, these technologies have earned the trust of institutions and individuals alike,” he says.
“What happens when the dire predictions don’t materialize? The answer, it seems, is to move the goalposts. If it’s not the deficit, it’s inflation; if not inflation, it’s the specter of regulatory uncertainty or geopolitical risk. The bond vigilantes thrive on fear, but the facts are increasingly inconvenient for their narrative. Yes Virginia, Wall Street has a cottage industry of Cassandras,” he said.
