Multiple insiders say Satya has quietly introduced a “tier” structure inside Microsoft to categorize leadership alignment with the company’s engineering priorities. It’s not officially called anything, but internally people are referring to it as the “caste chart.”
At the top are the Architects — the cloud, Azure, and AI people. These are the high priests of throughput, the ones with clean budgets and measurable output. Below them are the Builders — Office, Windows, infrastructure. Stable, reliable, obedient.
Then there’s the bottom tier: the Dreamers. The Xbox people. The ones who talk about “fun,” “community,” and “storytelling.” They’re not fired, but they’re not heard either.
Phil Spencer has reportedly been placed in that third group. Sources describe him as “ceremonially stripped of initiative.” One insider said, “He’s not in the decision loop anymore, but they let him keep the title. Optics, I guess.”
He’s still showing up to meetings. Still smiling. Still talking about Doom for the 32X. But his memos go unanswered. His proposals die in SharePoint folders.
The corporate caste is real, even if no one will call it that.
The Engineers rule the temple now.
And Phil? He’s the last Dreamer wandering the halls, controller in hand, preaching fun to machines that only understand compute.
