MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Congressman Steve Cohen says he will file a lawsuit in state court over a Congressional redistricting plan that is being voted on in Nashville right now.
Cohen announced the suit in a news conference Thursday morning in downtown Memphis.
Cohen, a Democrat who represents the Ninth District in Congress, is Tennessee’s only elected Democrat in Washington.
The new districts proposed by state Republicans would divide Memphis and Shelby County into three districts, each connected to more rural, conservative voters outside the city and as far away as the Nashville suburbs.

Cohen told WREG on Wednesday that he believes it’s a way to divide the Black vote in order to minimize their influence.
“It devastates the work that has been done to rectify the injuries to African Americans because of years, centuries of slavery and decades of Jim Crow rule and Jim Crow laws,” said Cohen. |
