From the perspective of consumer engagement, the console wars were unrivaled. Back then, it was rare to have two consoles, and I remember kids arguing endlessly over the merits of each.
No one really cares about the differences between an iPhone and a Galaxy. One reason is that you don't really have to pay the full cost of your phone, and another is that these things get replaced about every year or two, unlike consoles which were a 5 year investment.
