I think Portugal golden visa is the best value in europe

It's not as good as investing in real estate a few years ago, but right now u wouldn't make any money in real estate anyway. Also their nhr 2 program, once you decide to become a tax resident they don't tax foreign capital gains/dividends for 10 years. And they tax local income at flat 20% for 10yrs. I.e. if I continued to work as a doctor parttime I wouldn't get double taxed since my American tax is higher than 20% anyway. |

The other alternative is D7 visa: no investment requirement but must move there and become a tax resident. In that case you would initiate NHR regime that lasts 10yrars. All this time you do not need to be a tax resident of Portugal. Now if you decide to move to Portugal you benefit from 10yrs nhr tax, that's a real benefit if you're Canadian, because u could cash out your lifelong dividends tax free. USA on the other hand might have higher capital tax rate in 10 years than eu.. so potentially once you're a citizen u might give up usa citizenship(but you will probably get exit tax raped).
The other visa d7 without investment, only gives pr after 5years. You lose pr if you stay out of the country for 2 years or forget to renew pr card every 5 years. And once NHR is exhausted you'll be subject to regular portuguese tax which is about 10% higher than usa. So the goal is to use nhr for 10yrs and then give up tax residency or edtablish tax residency in a low tax country. |

Basically everyone who invest 500k for 5 years is now told citizenship is actually 10 years with application times actually 12years. So now that 500k must stay in Portugal for 12years instead of 5. |

That's way too much if you're going to invest 500k for 10yrs in their ttt economy. D7 visa doesn't require any investment, just requires you to live in Portugal. That can be useful once you are ready to move to Europe. I.e. get NHR for 10yrs, once you get PR card after 5 years, no need to stay in Portugal. They cannot take away PR card just because you stop being a tax resident. |
