not flame. The idea is that there's no hope of saving you, but we can at least make your final days less painful. And shortness of breath can be a source of pain. And the the risk of you becoming addicted to opiates is low. So nothing in the rules says you can use "shortness of breath" as an excuse to turn up dat drip

Some of the bad ones can't swallow and they have to put this thing in their mouths so they don't drown in saliva.

Yeah but this way they're not in pain, and no one is going to come around and accuse you of causing them too much shortness of breath

This is an entire line of medicine and it involves professionals except that the people who do visits with the patients are usually volunteers. Many volunteers are pre-med students who need credits for their med school applications, but others can do it for other reasons. One org I'm aware of does it for Vietnam vets. When they are in hospice they are more likely to be candid/willing to confess to a lot of shit they never talked about before, but their own kids aren't even visiting them, they got no one to talk to. This org sends someone there to say "hey I heard you're dying I was wondering if you had time to talk to me about the Vietnam war." It's actually that simple. Sign up to volunteer and find a vet near you who's in hospice
