i'm definitely not at that level yet
things he's fixed over four lessons and i've reinforced over 1-2 range sessions each week:
- i was overswinging the hell out of the ball, hands were nearly touching my ears on the backswing. i've since learned form and technique beats power
- the plane on my downswing was basically vertical (perpendicular to the ground) and in line with my body
- i was bending my knees too much and my back was far too arched, like a basketball player playing defense (guess which sport i played my whole life), this was causing early extension/standing up/chicken wings and i was topping the ball too much.
- fixed my grip
now most shots are going straight, still need some more consistency. after that have to add speed.

Sounds like a good instructor
When I'm fucking up now it's typically because of my posture (too straight) or standing too close to the ball
I figured out this quick sight check at address for irons:
-kneecaps vertically aligned with balls of feet
-hands above inner left heel & 1-1.5 fists away from my crotch

1) You want your shoulders to stay level (or stay tilted if swinging driver) from your backswing all the way through impact
2) You need enough space for your hands to clear your hips on down swing to get a smooth arc and hit your low point after contact (or just before contact with driver)
Being too vertical, bending knees too much, swaying, buckling right leg on take back, taking arms back too much, all prevent 1 and 2 from happening

agree with both of you, highly underrated and there are too many fake experts out there. when we first started we took lessons with another guy and he was ass, gave pointless advice like:
"you gotta whip the ball" he said this over and over
he showed us the interlocking grip and then said it doesn't matter too much and to use what we're comfortable with when grip matters a ton
god that guy sucked.
