"I could have made that" you smirk at your Tinder date.

"Yeah but you didn't" says the artist as he climbs into his Porsche

I know people that make a living 100% from creating and selling art

They are not wealthy or famous, though

All the ones I knew were born rich. I don't know how you would build out a studio and produce enough art for a showing without already have a shitload of money. Plus you have to host parties all the time and have lots of drugs sitting around.

People coming to your parties expect you to live in a STUDIO. That means a giant loft apartment or something like that. No one should be using stairs during your parties. If you're not throwing parties in your studio, you're not networking, and if your studio is just a house people will see through the facade.

One artist i know makes quirky pottery of various types that she sells online and also paints portraits. She has on average 3-4 different portrait commissions going at the same time.

The other creates art installations of various types for concerts, events, and art shows around new england. Shes sold a fair number of paintings and also has a side gig as a photographer.

Its very common for up and coming artists to share studio space. Person #1 above was sharing a big studio with 4 other artists until she could afford to rent a house with a dedicated space she could convert into a studio.

The artists I know getting by are teaching in art departments in colleges or community colleges and either stopped making art or just create a little bit here and there

From what I can tell the teaching gigs offer notenure and pay shitty, but the teachers are generally allowed to have house parties and invite undergrads. They also have the easiest time finding students to fuck.

Limiting it to people I’d call friends, I know one guy who maed it and a handful who produced sincerely cool things and talked about switching gears away from work to dedicate more time to art, but none of them actually made any big changes. It seems like a brutal world. There are a ton of talented people, so that’s just a necessary but not sufficient condition. Ton of luck involved, unsurprisingly.

The luck comes from being born with parents who will finance that shit. Making a name for yourself only requires living in a city and having an art studio and free drugs for guests. People expect the alcohol and drugs to be free at these events.
