might as well if u want to actually live there one day, or if u (correctly) assume the US will implode one day in which case the strength of a US passport cld easily go to hell

big difference between qualifying and getting it. i had to drag my near 80 at the time mom w/ me to the french consulate in chicago to get them to finally issue me a passport. that was with birth certificates, all the paperwork in order, etc.

but yeah, once you have an eu passport it allows you to:

- live, work, and retire freely across the eu and iceland. don't forget, a ton of nice islands across the world are part of the eu.

- worst case, tap into the 'free' healthcare of whatever country you have citizenship in

- for french, it allows you to avoid extradition to the us if you commit a crime (roman polanski)

if you move / retire to the eu with 'american money' you will be absolutely living the high life. euros are poors who don't own shit.

only reason i haven't gotten it yet is because i assumed it would be a huge hassle like you describe. i see some perks, but nothing amazing unless the US collapses and Europe somehow becomes the global leader (virtually impossible)

there are definitely risks in the case of collapse. europe is ttt compared to america when it comes to personal freedoms. we could all probably be locked up just for stuff we post on xo and most eu countries (except for sweden) were covid cucks with lockdowns and restrictions.

that said, it's still a good bail out destination if you are bringing over american levels of wealth. you can also generally get around europe w/o a car, etc.

consider hiring a lawyer/service to do the paperwork for you. i only went the route i did since i had the help of my mom, and even then, it involved a trip to chicago and dealing with nonsense.

doing some googling now, and it's telling me the process will take a year and require a pile of paperwork. also reddit proles are recommending hiring lawyers both here and in the EU country my parents are from.

For one if you buy vacation home there you can actually live there whenever you want without becoming a tax resident. If I wanted to live there I'd have to apply for a visa which would lead to taxes... If I had eu passport I would also switch my job from w2 to 1099. Basically w2 subtracts cost of Health insurance and other bullshit from my paycheck and I could have it for free in eu.
