They were created to be one of many small vehicles one could utilize to save for retirement.

They were never intended to be an absolute requirement to avoid eating dog food in your 80s, but it was advantageous for certain jews (who are NOT the same as the people who created 401ks btw) to have that be the case so here we are.

The end result is that proles buy $78;000k trucks and contribute 0% or like 4% in order to get a match when they’d need to contribute 20% or whatever to match an old school private sector pension or modern public sector pension. They also Sell Low. So they are Bad irl imo. proles should contribute $20,000k/yr and drive $27k manual Ford Rangers

No it's not. With a 401k/match, they give you the money and it's yours. Pensions are bad because it's way too easy for incumbents to promise sky high returns for minimal contributions, because by the time it becomes an issue they're gone. It's yet another thing boomers turned into a crisis.

where is his reasoning?

my wife and i each have roughly $1m in our accounts at ages 45 and 46. i'm focusing on getting to $1.2 - 1.5m in taxable accounts so i can go into semiretirement at around 49. we let the $2m in 401ks grow for another 20 years, it'll probably be 10-15m, likely on the higher end of that scale.

i guess most people can't retire because they are 52 and have $94k in their account, but the pension system is no better. didn't you generally have to work until like 62 under those systems anyway?

Yea I thought it required a full career and retirement in your sixties and the average lifespan was like 66 or 70. If he's referring to the modern pension system where cops can retire at 42 with full benefits for life thats not how the pension system really ever worked.

yeah, totally unrealistic to expect that. past performance is not a guarantee of future results!

even at an average return of 8% over that horizon, the 2m is just under 10m at year 20. if you start living off that and withdrawing 35k a month (with 2% increases to withdrawals annually), your money continues growing. of course, this doesn't apply if the s&p decides to reverse its historical trend of 11% returns and starts returning like 5%. then i guess we are all in trouble.

The problem is that any system which requires people to act responsibly at scale for their own self interest is never going to work. There’s just no fucking way people are going to max out their 401k when they could instead buy an iPhone and a huge ass truck.

This is why I begrudgingly admit that social security is necessary to prevent olds from starving to death.

Why wouldn't we actually encourage it to reinforce to everyone else not to be a fucking idiot?

The answer is that our entire consumption-based system would collapse if people spent responsibly, so we'll prop it up until we simply can't do it any longer

mmm perhaps not factions per se, as that would require coherent and consistent ideology. i guess moreso that we're just as ideologically malleable as the left with many contorting their opinions and positions based on whatever thing is of particular import to them.

there's no reason to because you agreed with me in your last response.

"you don't want to "conserve" traditional government, you want no government at all."

"all consideration of government except national defense should begin with the premise that the less government, the better"

retard, if all consideration of government should begin with the premise that the less government the better then whatever government exists you'll want less than that i.e. you want no government ultimately.

"Pension" was a concept for disabled military vets. Because you couldn't work so they'd give you cash. Then FDR comes along and they invent Social Security to try to get you to "retire" at 65 to create jobs for younger people because the economy was ass. Then FDR put in wage control so you couldn't give real raises and companies instead gave you a "pension" to circumvent the wage controls. It's all complete and total flaem.

Forcing everyone to self-fund their own retirement savings results in inefficient over-investment and under-consumption. The issue is that if forces everyone to self-insure against longevity risk, which requires much, much more capital than risk sharing.

You're thinking about this entirely wrong. A person can of course spend 40 years planning ahead and come out better off than most people (who do not plan ahead at all). If instead everyone is forced to "plan ahead" valuations skyrocket (because people are being forced to save, and have no choice but to buy into some investment) while fundamentals deteriorate because actual consumption is deferred. If everyone does that, they don't end up richer, they just end up owning a bunch of stocks with horrible P/E ratios. And if the answer is that it's OK because the next generation is also being forced to save, so they also have to buy the already inflated stocks at an even higher valuation, then great, you just made social security, except way more expensive.

not everyone is forced to plan ahead. that's why we have so many fucking poors.

people who do plan ahead should be better off than those who don't

whenever you have people involving the government in social policies, they will fuck it up. it follows that the goals of social policy should focus on the bare minimum necessary to achieve the goal. people should be incentivized to achieve far more than the guaranteed minimum.

i agree with a point you are making which is why i was and remain against social security investing in or permitting beneficiaries to invest in the stock market. not entirely because of your point, but that is one of the reasons

it's not like there aren't many other options besides the stock market for people to invest in. and it's not like the stock market doesn't consist of stocks all over the world and in different markets or industries, etc

401ks make more sense than pensions. Remember, at its peak apparently 40% of people were part of a pension plan - a huge umber of that probably never saw a dime. Many of those also went bust up even if they did qualify.

The US job market is much more fluid now so you need a much more fluid solution.

Plus, a pension basically would require you to put total trust in your corporate employer. Public companies are basically required to be evil. Any time you had a bad earnings call, an army of HR people would examine creative ways to fuck over employees and relieve the long term pension obligation.

It's a safer result for you and your employee to put your retirement money in your own account.

Both the 401(k) and the pension are legacies of a bygone era where employers sort of looked after employees for life. For the reasons you mention, there should be no employer retirement plans, and employers should just pay the money to employees and it’s up to the employees to figure out what to do with their money. Government can pass all of the tax benefits on to the individual taxpayers.

These convoluted mechanisms for retirement funding are not necessary and make it harder for regular folks to get what they earn and easier for business owners to pay themselves more in sheltered ways.

At my first job, I had the option of either a traditional pension or having my employer contribute the money that would have gone into the pension fund into a 401k-type plan. I ran the numbers, and even if I assumed extremely conservative stock market returns, if I contributed to the 401k plan until the vesting date for the pension and immediately converted it into an immediate annuity, I would end up with a monthly benefit that was far greater than the monthly pension benefit.

TLDR: Pensions are flame. The only benefit of a pension is that it prevents you from contributing 0% to your 401k and buying an $80k truck instead. If you are a non-stupid investor, you will end up with far more money in retirement if you contribute to a 401k.

the mixed system the US has with forced savings via SS, plus additional 401k savings you can do yourself, seems like a decent compromise. doing one or the other entirely both have huge pitfalls. most people are retarded and simply wont save if you dont Force them to, but pensions blow up and slash benefits all the time

Dumb take. Don’t force people to save. Make employers pay them and then they’re on their own in old age. Pensions and retirement culture is a profound disease. Nobody should retire. If you’re disabled and can’t work that’s one thing, but nobody should be allowed to just stop working because they’re angry or sad or just can’t hack it. Get back in.
