2. It’s not as if there haven’t been other leaders or federations who have tried to backchannel things to FIFA. Mostly the issue here is how overt Trump is about his meddling. He saw US soccer people happy online and sprinted to the press to make sure everyone knew he did it and no one else did it. Now Euros are clutching their pearls.
3. Candace is right that we are now the villains of the tournament and Trump’s need to make it all about him isn’t a great look. We are better than Belgium by a good margin so I doubt it matter tonight, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if this game is called tighter by refs who don’t want to be droned by Hegseth. |
