Last Major War: Sino-Vietnamese War (1979)
• Conflict: China invaded northern Vietnam in February 1979 to “teach Vietnam a lesson” for its invasion of Cambodia (which ousted China’s ally, the Khmer Rouge).
• Duration: About 3 weeks of major combat.
• Outcome: China withdrew after facing fierce resistance; both sides claimed victory. PLA performance exposed serious weaknesses in training, logistics, and coordination.

That’s why an invasion of Taiwan would be disastrous. They need to find reasons to use their military every few years, just as the United States does and other great powers historically have done.
