I've worked with a few Mormons over the years. One was a young Chad who was married with kids at 20 and went on a "mission" trip for like three years.

Also the mission trips seem to be one of the keys to the success of their religious organization. Takes a young man or woman's rite of passage into "spiritual maturity" (I think your title switches to Church Elder after, even if they're only 20 something. Funny detail) and weds it to a proselytizing/outreach/community building thing. Some of their theology is quite strange but as far as a sensibly and intelligently designed religious "corporation" goes they do far better than most other christian sects in the US today

I've been flipping through a couple of ex/anti-mormon sites and forums to see the other side of this group from insider perspectives but the median complaint against it seems pretty tame
