it definitely should be, unless you have serious spending problems. you can safely withdraw 400-450k/year and your money should never run out. realistically, you should be living off like 200k and your overall balance should continue to grow.

Real inflation is 15% a year, conservatively.

$10 mil @ 5% return = $500,000 / year

That’s $400,000 after 20% taxes (conservative)

$200,000 needs to be reinvested which is 2% growth per year

Leaving you $200,000 to spend

Can you survive 40 years where your $10 mil gets whittled down in purchasing power 13% a year?

where do you get 15% a year? if that is anywhere close to accurate, then 10 million isn't enough and we are all doomed

I agree the official numbers are bs, but 15% cannot be accurate. Everything would double in cost every 4 years or something

so everything is going to be double the cost again in 5 years, then double again in another 5 years? do you have any basis for this claim? if this is true, the US about to become a south american third world hellhole.

yeah man. the US government runs a 2 trillion dollar a year deficit, is sitting on 40 trillion in debt, the demand weakness for U.S. treasuries is well known, the debt to GDP ratio is the highest ever at 123% (higher than it was in WW2 at 106%), and the federal reserve has to print unlimited loldollars to keep everything afloat

i don't see inflation ever coming back down, only intensifying as the money printers go brrrrrrr

Are you assuming he keeps the whole thing in treasury bonds? He doesn’t need to withdraw more than he spends imho. Only realized gains are taxed.

Somehow I never made a killing in housing. Lost $100K on a house in Palo Alto. Paid 7-12% for mortgages along the way. Current house has doubled in 27 years. It’s a place to live, not an investment.

180. Did you actually retire with more than $10m or did your assets just naturally grow to that number with time?

I figure I don’t need anywhere near $10m to retire. We will have substantial income in retirement from my wife’s pension and social security and I don’t even like doing anything anyway. Maybe a camping trip a couple times per year. I think hotels are dumb and expensive and I don’t like crossing the pond as it’s called. Would much rather just be left alone.

I’ve been retired over 23 years from full time work. It was so long ago I don’t remember, but it was in the vicinity of $5M absolute, $10M inflation adjusted.

$10 million is enough assuming you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness and have two years to live. Then go ahead and give your two weeks notice.
