Reddit is now trying to force you to use their app on mobile

The breakdown between app, mobile web, "New" Reddit, and old.reddit.com was far from what I would have suspected. Tons of app users, only a tiny amount of old.reddit.com users

Date: May 2nd, 2026 6:00 PM Author: garnet heaven mother Yea. With Firefox on Android in a private tab, I open up Reddit and it won't let me do anything. Can't scroll anything, can't log in, it just tells me to get the app.
It took me a little while to notice but if I open it in a regular tab I can still use it like normal. |

I do that sometimes anyways because the mobile version doesn't let you do some things. But also, I just tried the mobile site and it has a toast at the bottom saying to install the app, but I closed it and it seemed fine. But if I load reddit.com in a private tab in Firefox on Android, I can't do anything, it just tells me to get the app.
If I set Firefox to load the desktop site, that still works. And going to old.reddit.com still works. But both of those are fairly shitty ways of using Reddit on a phone.
I guess it's minor. But it's a bad omen of what they're planning to do to the site. |
