He was trying to get blanket coverage to search for this guy's cell phone pinging off the tower and the judge was like fuk u, you get an hour. He was telling me how he narrowed down the time frame and shit and at this point he lost me it was some straight Jigsaw John shit he was talkin about ring cameras and geolocation and shit it sounded super complicated.
Anyway he got the search warrant for that hour and he got the suspect's phone pinging. It was an armed robbery of some guy selling Jordan's on Instagram. It was an inside job somebody knew the guy and where he'd be and shit. Buddy sold him out and these guys busted down the door and stole all his sneakers. The suspects almost got away but this dude got picked up on a weed charge a few weeks later and the whole case unraveled.
My buddy said husband favorite part of the job is confronting them with the evidence in the interrogation room. He told the guy we got so much evidence on you we don't even need the confession. The guy said "Go fuck yourself" and my buddy said "No thanks" and walked away. He said he was grinning ear to ear for the rest of the day. |

there aren't a lot of aggrevating circumstances here and a death penalty sentence isn't even a slam dunk. the guy has no criminal history. there is certainly a lot to work with on appeal. a random murderer with no history isn't usually the type of person that gets the dp let alone fast tracked.

No DNA from him on victims. No DNA from victims on him. No eyewitness that can ID him. Witness saw shadowy figure, but was very intoxicated and went back to bed before calling 911. No other evidence putting him at crime scene. No murder weapon. No clear motive/connection to victims. Defense can poke holes in the DNA evidence and there might be unknown issues that could get it excluded. Seems like the witnesses/victims were heavy partiers, so defense can bring up all kinds of embarrassing stuff to attack credibility and suggest alternative theories. Trial is probably 10% chance not guilty and 15% chance mistrial (where he would get a better plea after). Even assuming guilty verdict, there's a big chance he doesn't get DP (conservative Christians who believe in forgiveness, he has mental issues etc.). Even if he gets DP, there's a big chance he gets it reduced on appeal or strings out appeals for a few decades before he gets murdered or killself. So you are risking a not guilty with about the same probability as a DP being ultimately carried out, and most likely outcome is the same as he gets now (dies in prison). |
