Interviewing a candidate for my firm today. He says he's making 60k in his present shitlaw job. This is with a couple of years of experience in one of those Sunbelt cities that's in the news for exploding cost of living. Also responsible for paying for his bar dues, CLE's, research materials, computer out of that.

A lot of shitlaw bosses aren't bringing in much money to their firms?

that is insane. when i was in shitlaw, i poasted at JDU (i got banned for calling the admin a chink/slope/zipperhead) and there were a couple shitlawyers a few years in who still made like 50k or whatever, but 45k in the 2020s is insane. any rational person would give up and leave law.

In her case, it was that she was really really really committed to staying in the small town that she was from and had few options. Was talking about letting her work remotely but she ended up finding another local shitlaw firm.

Not a lawfag. How do shitlawyers fail? I figured even shitty personal injury cases settle for $50k or whatever. Do 1 a month and you've cleared like $150k. Run all ur expenses through ur firm (car, etc). I have assumed a key pillar of the economy is muds getting $50k from bullshit PI.

there are shit tons of lawyers, way more than there are cases/clients to go around. lots of shitlawyers are legitimately stupid as fuck. i temped at an ID shithouse that did the same lead paint defense case over and over (teen dindus in baltimore city who were criminals and borderline retarded and sued their landlords because the paint in the apartment that was applied in the 50s had lead in it). the firm went up against the same PI firm over and over, and all the pleadings had "plaintiff" misspelled in various ways, etc. everyone involved was a dimwit. the insurance companies apparently wised up and amended their policies in 1995 or 1996, but the cases were to continue until the youngest dindu reached 18 + the SOL had run (which has probably finally happened).

someone like that isn't going to make a good living, they might as well be an insurance adjuster or something.

CSLG and his brethren can tell you about picking PI cases, but it's got to be hard to pick really good ones. 104 iq cooley law bros are taking anything coming through the door and making no $.

"Run all ur expenses through ur firm (car, etc)"

Wow. . .you really don't know how to run a business. There are only a few expenses that you can justifably run through your business as an expense unless you want the IRS up your ass.

Plus, the hard part of PI isn't GETTING the cases, it's WORKING THEM UP PROPERLY. If you don't have the right staff in place, you'll spend so much time trying to move the case that you'll never make money on it.

There's a shitlaw firm near me that pays $65k. No PTO and biglaw type billing requirements. They of course have a revolving door of garbage associates.

y'all have no clue. I handle some disciplinary matters and there are lawyers out there begging and pleading for $500 to make a will or defend a misdemeanor. taking *payment plans* on $500.

Of course 1/2 the time they end up not doing it, or stealing money out of the trust account, so you can see how they got there.

i've seen drug addictions ofc as well as a gambling addiction (one of which was the worst in terms of sheer $$$ at issue) but some of them are just garden variety incompetent and unreliable

Most of these ppl aren’t even worth that. We used to have a couple folks we paid $75k to and I’d beg my partners to just hire a real associate. “Would you rather have 2 [worthless warm body from the local TTT]’s or one [neurotic ex-biglaw chick that puts in 2,200 hours against a 1,900 target and is fundamentally a non-retard]?” Because I’d literally rather have one of the latter than 4 of the former.

I typed my original poast on my phone but it was important to me to come back and clarify: "And this is not me saying that law is some super-difficult and -important field that only the elite can hang in; this is about how SHITTY some ppl are, not anything about the position. And you can see that in how certain staff are worth more than most garbage associates."
