The car chase isn't a great car chase per se, but since they actually fucking did it, it's pretty great (and has some of the best car chase photography of any action film).

But I loved it--and I'm not one of those guys who sucks the dick of every "important" American movie from the 1970s (I thought The Conversation was a boring SPS for example). And I know the ending is polarizing, but it works for me.

I think it's supposed to be based on a true story. But just lol at all those cops and feds going apeshit over 50 kilos, and these kingpins were only getting like 4 years in the slammer back then. Plus Gene Hackman fucks everything up in the end and pwns that FBI guy, and 2/3 of the suspects get away or escape conviction for any serious crime.

Plus NYC looks like SHIT in that movie.

That's not even the crazy part. Years later the FBI learned that almost all of the heroin that was seized in the French Connection bust was stolen by the Italian Mafia (specifically the Lucchese crime family). They paid a couple of cops to walk into the evidence locker and steal the heroin and replace it with baking soda.

if you watch a bunch of 60s films and then watch the car chase in french connection, it's clearly on another level. but i agree that it's been surpassed. the car chase in the Mini through Paris in Bourne Identity is my favorite car chase of all time. Bourne is using the Mini in ways that the people chasing him couldn't (going down alleys, down stairs, on the sidewalk, etc.). so it really shows his superior intelligence and training. music's good. you really want him to get away. it's just perfect and it actually serves a purpose.

Honestly I think a lot of it was people just wanting to get out of the house for a while.

There wasn’t cable TV or video games back then.

Also air conditioning was a factor. A lot of people didn’t have it (including my prole family). The longer the Film, the longer you were in Cool Air.
