I watched the Russian movie War (2002), after it was recommended to me as the third film to watch after Brother (1997) and Brother2 (2000), all three of which starred Sergei Bodrov Jr. (who was pretty unrecognizable in War). Of the three, War was my favorite; Brother was well done but the scope was narrow about an ex-Russian special forces operative who helps his brother assassinate some underworld figures while remaining friendly and emotionally unperturbed, while Brother 2 was a reverse fish-out-of-water story (with a Russian in NYC critical of U.S. race relations and predatory capitalism) with a loose plot with some substantial plot holes which veered very close to parody.

War is different, though: on the surface it’s about the Russia/Chechnya war and how the Chechens were brutal in their enslavement, torture and execution methods of prisoners, where the main character decides to help rescue one of the Chechnya hostages against close to impossible odds and with zero support from the Russian government or military. What makes the film dissident to me is that the main character listens to his intuition and engages in this rescue mission with no support because some part of him told him to; it wasn’t about the money and he didn’t want to do it, but he felt called to do so; it was about the desperation of the other character who asked him for help, as well as his respect for another prisoner in the same place, an injured and captured captain that the government didn’t care about and who the main character wanted to rescue. After the mission improbably succeeded, the main character was put on trial for carrying out the operation, showing that just because you listen to your intuition it isn’t going to necessarily work out for the best, but he didn’t regret doing it anyway. I liked how at the end the main character was able to assess his situation relatively objectively and level headed.

It was well plotted, well cast, and well directed. I recommend it.
