A basic bolt action hunting rifle is like $600 before dealer discounts.

Right. When they said he had a "Mauser" I don't think they meant it was made at the Mauser factory, just that it had the bolt action. This douchebag could afford a cheap bolt-action no problem

*sigh* I hate having to do this to libs every single fucking time on guns, but let me correct you, mauser is both a brand and a very, very old design from germany that has been used across dozens if not hundreds of bolt action rifles, it is basically a form factor for the action that went out of patent 100 years ago

I haven’t been following things closely this evening. Are there specifics on the rifle?

If it’s a “real” Mauser, is it milsurp or a clone or something?

the picture I saw was of a black composite stocked bolt action, which would be a modern rifle from god knows what brand but potentiall a "mauser" because that is just a design not a particular model, the US had mausers in WWI and people have been making mauser actions every since

The Republicans ever manage to give us a reprieve from the NFA, I’m going on an absurd buying spree before the pendulum swings back. But I agree, not worth it with a stamp

Tbh most bolt actions from the era are basically indistinguishable around 200 yards

There's not a ton of difference in "what's possible" with a Lee Enfield vs a Carcano vs a Mosin Nagant or what have you. They're all pretty similar. You can also get, or you could pre-COVID, crates of these things at like 150-200 a pop if you knew an importer

Maybe for the more finicky ones but pre-COVID one importer I watch had Russian Mosins for 160 or so. Cheaper if you bought in bulk (with that gross cerakote or whatever it's called on them. The pink goo sealant stuff)

I haven't seen the picture and am putting off looking into it much more for now as the response from both sides has been unsettling

COVID was the only real major gun price spike in my life. 2016-18 were gold mines for milsurp imports. Sub-200 existed in '17 if you knew where to look
