I don't "get" these huge NBA contracts. Nobody actually watches the sport

the NBA is definitely a massive bubble
nobody irl cares about the NBA either. even the jews and nigs and azns who actually follow the NBA are almost entirely Online. it's become an Online/reddit subculture that's totally divorced from irl

You have to give the NBA credit for seeing what sports fandom would become in the Current Year. It’s just people talking on the Internet or poasting highlights or gossiping about players personal lives / roster moves. No one actually watches the games (this is true for every sport now except the NFL). The NBA just started a huge new TV deal so it doesn’t even matter that the ratings suck. The money has been booked for like a decade.
I do think there is something to the bubble theory though. A lot of owners have gotten out recently…Cuban, the Buss Family, the Timberwolves guy, etc. Seems like people in the know sense the franchise values are peaking.

1) Ratings are down, but are still meaningful - which is important when overall TV ratings are down even more
2) Games generally sell out nationwide, and there are 82 of them. Owners get massive gate, concession revenue
3) NBA rosters are small
4) The sport also has significant international growth levers

If you asked most NBA "fans" if they were more interested in finding out who won the NBA champioship between OKC and Indiana, or who traded for 36-year old Kevin Durant - almost everyone would pick Durant.
This is backed by the sports podcasts i listen to.
Not sure how that is sustainable longterm.

NBA players will forfeit more than $480 million from the escrow fund after the league's basketball-related income fell short of projections for the 2024-25 season. The NBA pegged BRI at $10.25 billion, according to someone familiar with the accounting who was granted anonymity because the details are private.
Players will retain just 90.9 percent of their salaries from last season. The collective bargaining agreement requires the league to withhold 10 percent of player salaries to ensure the revenue split stays at 51 percent for players.
Top Earners Hit Hardest:
Stephen Curry, the NBA's highest-paid player at $55.8 million, will forfeit $5.1 million from the escrow fund. Other star players facing significant cuts include Joel Embiid ($4.7 million), Nikola Jokic ($4.7 million), Bradley Beal ($4.6 million) and Kevin Durant ($4.5 million).
A player earning $20 million would net $18.2 million before taxes and agent fees. The 10 percent escrow was split 91 percent to teams and 9 percent back to players
