Gold is actually not the best example because it does have practical application (it’s used in medicine, electronics, etc) , so all the gold in the world is intrinsically worth more than $25.

But the point remains that the price appreciation over time is due to inflation and the idea that the next person will pay more for it. It doesn’t really do anything or compound to become more valuable over time, so it’s not a good investment compared to e.g. a strong company that’s growing earnings over time.
