Since Donkey Kong, almost all games have had some sort of story, however rudimentary. If a game were just meaningless clumps of pixels, I think most people would find that pretty boring. Sometimes the stories are more elaborate, but I think even then they can be good. Final Fantasy X stands out to me as having a very strong, complex plot that makes some pretty subtle theological commentary if you're familiar with the Hebrew Bible (compare the Israelite judges to the summoners).
