I running a dividend portfolio so ETF's like SCHD but also individual stocks like RTX, VZ, O, BTI, HESM, etc. It will underperform 'the market' during boom years but 'the market' is kind of bs right now.

the volatility is nuts. First stonks were worthless. Then they went on a massive bull run for 3 months. And then hedge funds and institutions rug pulled everyone. "Lock in those 100% gains!" They locked in and now trillions in equity have been temporarily destroyed. Just so some asshole can tell investors that they did good on the year.

Well then don't say "in cash" faggot.

Plenty of people actively manage their 401ks. If you felt there wasn't a good investment opportunity it's rational to hold cash. Considering 15 years ago was during ITE it would not be surprising that someone was holding a substantial amount of cash. I'm sure plenty of people have substantial amount of cash in their 401k right now because they're worried the market is overvalued. Why do you think SPAXX has a value of $450b right now?!

and corp 401Ks are a pain in the dick to actively trade individual stocks. the fidelity crap for what it's worth wasn't that bad (started with far less than $130K when I left that job).

We don't need to turn this into a subthread wasteland like yesterday. I assumed that by "in cash" you meant you had kept a bunch of money in their cash fund, something that does exist and that many people put money in. I don't think it's ESL to read that, I think it's poor drafting that you meant "kept the money in fidelity funds instead of rolling them over into other funds." And you could have just said that rather than being YSFFM about a subthread yesterday.

This is true whether or not a company issues dividends. And by definition a bankrupt company is insolvent, i.e. debts and liabilities exceed assets. Stockholdere in companies that were liquidated in bankruptcy rarely receive anything and whether that company paid a dividend previously doesn't impact anything.

I understand that part but he seems to be drawing a distinction between what those companies are worth when liquidated. If a solvent company was liquidated for some reason all the profts that could have been issued as a dividend would be owed to the shareholders.

Choosing to invest in companies that reinvest profits isn't nad or even speculative. Every company reinveste at least a portion of their profits if they want to grow at all. Berkshire Hathaway, the posterchild for traditional, value investing, does not issue a divided. And I am happy for Warren Buffet to hold what could have been my divided to reinvest in other things.

Waiting 5 years for a 70% return with virtually no risk is a solid, irrefutably great plan (it's even better if you have tens of millions to play with. The bigger your chip stack, the more 70% can be life altering!)

That being said in the same time span chip stocks and tech went nuclear by comparison. Google alone did almost double that. And other stocks went to the absolute moon.
