Israel’s government has not officially commented on Zohran Mamdani’s election as mayor of New York City, but his victory sparked fierce reactions from right wing politicians, along with calls for New York’s Jewish community to immigrate to Israel.

Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir issued a statement calling Mamdani’s election “a disgrace that will be remembered forever,” accusing the new mayor of being “a Hamas supporter, an avowed antisemite, and an enemy of Israel.”

Former Israeli Ambassador to the UN and the US, Gilad Erdan, similarly lamented the outcome, writing on X that “an Israel-hater who sees us as an apartheid genocidal state now leads the most important city in the world, home to the largest Jewish population outside Israel.”

Erdan added it was “a dark day” for those who understand “the immense importance of the alliance with the United States.” He cautioned that “What happened in New York could soon happen across the United States, including in Congress and even the White House.”

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani has faced criticism for his history of pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel activism, though in recent months, Mamdani has tempered some of his controversial positions and tried to reassure Jewish voters. A CNN exit poll showed that Mamdani, received 33% of the Jewish vote, while Cuomo won 63% percent of Jewish voters..

Former Israel Defense and Foreign Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, wrote on X: “The Big Apple has fallen,” dubbing Mamdani “the poster boy of silent jihad.” Lieberman called the vote “a resounding wake-up call for New York Jews who cherish life to move to where they belong - the Land of Israel.”
