Glorious auto-sort to the midwit pile!!!

It's becoming INCREASINGLY obvious that people who use AI all the time in communication cannot think for themselves or make arguments without leaning on the computer robot.

Agreed. Many, many people basically play-acting like they have any depth of knowledge because they can copy-paste out of an LLM. Not good!!

The irony is that the reliance on LLMs are actually making them worse at rhetoric. It immediately flags them as not serious. What great thinker can't make their own case for themselves? Lol. Persuasion is like 9/10ths of what makes a human attractive to other people.

Part of the problem is that midwits mistake LLM's knowledge of a topic for their own mastery. So it becomes less of a tool to help them think through an issue and more of a way to pretend they're as smart as they think they are.

If you have actual mastery in a subject area, I think the tools can be helpful to refine arguments you'd already make. If you do anything more than that, the danger of looking like a dumbass are very real.

It's really funny how the midwits cannot resist the temptation to lower themselves. They hear the siren song. LLMs luring their ships to crash on the rocks of mediocrity and yet they can't help themselves.

CR.

AI is a great tool for refining arguments. It's also a great tool for learning things. But you have to want to learn it, use it as a guide to finding real sources, and understand it's often wrong or straight up hallucinates things.

Most people, especially midwits, will just use it to pose as an expert rather than a resource in becoming one, sadly.

I'm talking about refining an argument, not having it generate one. It's a great tool for asking stuff like "Are there any faults in my logic?" or "Does this response address everything?" In that way it functions similarly to spell and grammar checks.

You ever think that megathreads calling you aggressively stupid and getting criticized for not understanding or responding to arguments indicate you'd be well-served by some self-critique?

I can appreciate this. And I think as time passes that this sort of approach will stand out in really strong ways. Requires some level of natural charisma, but it has massive appeal IMO.

A lot of business communication is sterile bullshit and AI is perfect for that. If you're talking about genuine communication I agree. But when I get an AI email from someone else they're getting one in reply.

for sure. and even more important is public thinking. ai lets everyone create a script that sounds well thought out and even profound to normies (especially sub 105 iq)

but any follow up question or simple change of assumptions will require actually thinking on the fly and can reveal dumb dumbs very fast.

of course people will try to hide behind screen and use live, on-the-fly ai to create sensible responses to give the a simulacrum of a thoughtful, bright person

i don't think it actually matters that much

anyone who is dumb/bad at writing enough to use AI to write for them is otherwise going to be putting out barely coherent garbage anyway. so either they're giving you AI slop (which is cringe, but at least readable) or their own useless babble

in most cases i'd rather get the AI slop from them

Lol

I guess it's like saying I'd rather this indigenous tribe who thinks the world is in a bowl of milk goes through a translator rather than trying to speak English themselves.

pretty much, yeah

AI is actually really helpful for ESL people and even people who don't speak another target language at all. it enables seamless communication for them with foreign language speakers. it's one of its best use cases
